One exam stands between you and citizenship

The B1 for Italian citizenship is a hard pass/fail gate. Miss the mark in a single section and you retake the entire exam. Official sittings fill up fast and sell out months ahead. And most language apps teach you to order coffee โ€” not to handle the specific tasks, timing, and scoring of this exam.

Frequently asked questions

Which exam do I need: CILS B1, CELI, or PLIDA?

For Italian citizenship you must pass a B1-level exam from an approved provider. The CILS B1 Cittadinanza is the most common and is purpose-built for citizenship applicants. CELI and PLIDA B1 are also accepted, but the format differs. Our prep focuses on the CILS B1 cittadinanza format.

Do I need the B1 exam for citizenship by descent?

No. The B1 language requirement applies to citizenship by marriage and by residency (naturalization). Citizenship by descent (jure sanguinis) does not currently require the B1 exam.

How long is the exam?

The exam covers listening, reading, writing, and speaking and runs roughly three hours โ€” all completed in a single sitting on the same day.

What's the pass mark?

You need at least 7 out of 12 in each section and a total of 28 out of 48 overall, achieved in one sitting. Fail any single section and you must retake the exam.
